Distance Learning: Meeting Needs of Individual Students

The key to success in the classroom lies in having appropriate adaptations, accommodations, and modifications made to the instruction and other classroom activities. In a distance learning environment, educators need to consider the needs of individual students with appropriate accommodations and modifications. An accommodation is a change to the way learning takes place. Modifications are changes to the expectations of the curriculum.

Professional Development

What: Create a learning community to support the implementation of accommodations and modifications for specific student groups via distance learning.

How: Topical webinars based on the adaptations, accommodations, and modifications needed to serve students. Presenters will share practices and engage in dialogue with school districts and charter schools statewide. Presentations will be recorded and shared on the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE)’s website.

Webinar Goal: Reinforce the message that districts and charter schools need to reflect on and strengthen their practices as they modify their distance learning plans.

Webinar Components: Presentations will be offered by experts from MDE and partner organizations. Each webinar will feature a resource from the Minnesota Distance Teaching and Learning Guidance or other COVID-19 resource. Topics will be viewed from the student-need lens first. One-page of key takeaways will be provided for each presentation.
