Jane Harstad, D.Ed.

As Director of the Office of American Indian Education, Dr. Jane Harstad serves as the agency’s chief liaison in working with the 11 Minnesota Tribal Nations and Twin Cities American Indian communities. The Office of Indian Education administers the American Indian Education Aid program, which serves 143 eligible school districts, charters, and Bureau of Indian Education tribal contract schools. The division also oversees the Ethel Curry American Indian Leadership Scholarship program and the Minnesota Indian Teacher Training program. Additionally, the division provides training and technical assistance to schools and districts in the areas of Indian education program implementation and parent advisory committee development.

Dr. Harstad was born and raised in the Twin Cities and is a member of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. After working as an elementary teacher in St. Paul, she continued her education to include a Master’s and Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership in the American Indian Leadership Program at Penn State. Upon returning to Minnesota, she continued her career as a principal and in the research field among the nonprofit sector.
