Community Connections: Addressing Student Crisis

Date: June 21, 2019

Time: 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Location: Minnesota Department of Education (MDE), 1500 Highway 36 West, Roseville, MN, Conference Center B, Room 15. Find directions to MDE. MDE has complimentary visitor parking.

Time out of school has huge implications for student achievement and future success. When done well, school discipline policies should have a positive impact on school climate, keep students engaged in learning, improve student achievement and graduation rates, and increase students’ chances for lifelong success.

The MDE has developed a training session that will help school administrators better understand the Minnesota’s Pupil Fair Dismissal Act (PFDA) and federal laws that comprise the legal framework for addressing student conduct, with an emphasis on the importance of alternatives to suspension and the use of positive behavioral supports. Information will be presented on topics related to the use of disciplinary action in schools including due process protections for students, suspension procedures, expulsion and exclusion hearings, and a brief review of discipline data in Minnesota. The overview also includes alternative education service requirements, manifestation determinations, and 45-school-day placements as they relate to students with individualized education programs (IEPs). The presentation of information will be followed by an opportunity for administrators to apply the legal framework in structured case studies facilitated by MDE staff.

Training is provided at no cost to you, and Board of School Administrators (BOSA) credits will be available.
