Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) provides all children in participating elementary schools with a variety of free fresh fruit and vegetable snacks within the school day. It is an effective and creative way to introduce fresh fruits and vegetables as healthy snack options. The FFVP also encourages schools to develop partnerships at the state and local levels for support in implementing and operating the program. The Minnesota Department of Education's Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) administers the FFVP through a federal grant. Applications to participate in the FFVP are administered in March and April of each year for participation in the following school year. Schools with the highest enrollment of students eligible for free and reduced-price meals are given priority for participation in the FFVP, based on the school data reported each October. In order to meet eligibility for this program, schools must:
  • Be an elementary school.
  • Represent the highest percentage of students certified for free and reduced-price benefits (at least 50 percent of enrolled students).
  • Participate in the National School Lunch Program.
  • Complete the FFVP application (March and April).
