English Language Development Standards
Minnesota is One of Five States Selected for WIDA eLearning Pilot Program Beginning September 1, 2018Four new on-demand, self-paced eLearning sessions will be available at no charge to Minnesota school districts and charter schools on September 1. These interactive eWorkshops are designed to help content teachers and administrators better meet the needs of English learners and other multilingual learners. These sessions provide relevant, practical content that educators can put into action in the classroom, including resources that can be printed and used immediately.
- Upon completion of an eLearning module, participants can print a certificate of completion.
- These sessions are available to all K-12 educators in Minnesota with an expanded WIDA username and password granting access to the WIDA eLearning Portal.
- Educators can complete the sessions on their own or can use one or more of the eWorkshops with colleagues in a professional learning community.
Four eLearning Workshops1. English Learner Foundational Concepts – Audience: Teacher Leaders, Facilitators, Coaches, and ESL/Bilingual Teachers
This session includes activities with reflective questions to promote discussions that (1) build awareness about English learners; (2) explore the English language development standards framework; and, (3) promote new actions to support English learners in the classroom. This eWorkshop can help you build capacity in your school or district around multilingual learners and English language development within academic settings. There is enough material for two full days of content training for facilitators. The facilitator can determine which activities and steps to use with their PLC.
2. Doing and Talking STEM – Audience: Science Teachers, Math Teachers, and ESL/Bilingual Teachers
This session supports K–12 content for English language development (ELD) teachers as they interact with the resources introduced on the Doing and Talking Math and Science website. Resources are provided to support discourse–centered instruction and collaborative meaning–making in the STEM classroom. Through a series of reflections, video exercises, and resources, this session helps teams maximize the content on the website and strengthen skills in three areas: (1) building on students' knowledge of languages; (2) building students' ideas about how the world works; and, (3) engaging students as questioners, thinkers, and problem solvers.
3. Using the WIDA Writing Rubric – Audience: K-12 classroom and ESL/bilingual teachers
This session is for educators who work with multilingual learners to develop their writing. The series is for educators of grades 1-12 to use individually or with a Professional Learning Community (PLC). It is divided into two sections: (1) Using the WIDA Writing Rubric for Instruction; and, (2) Using the WIDA Writing Rubric to Analyze Student Writing. Each section includes a video that contains narration, interactions, knowledge checks, handouts, and analysis tools, as well as a PLC Collaborative Protocol Template handout to guide the use of this session in a professional learning community.
4. Leading for Equity: Classroom Walkthroughs – Audience: K-12 school leaders who engage in classroom walkthroughs
This workshop introduces a sample walkthrough resource that includes specific attention to practices and principles of exemplary and equitable teaching for multilingual learners. This resource can be applied to current walkthrough practices and protocols in any classroom in which academic language connected to content is used. Participants will learn to use and apply this formative classroom walkthrough resource. Video, subject matter expert commentary, and handouts are included.
Accessing the WIDA eLearning Center – Getting StartedDistricts and charter schools will need to designate a District Learning Coordinator (DLC) to determine which staff across the district will need a WIDA eLearning account. This person could be the district assessment coordinator (DAC) or district staff involved with district professional learning efforts. This person will need to contact email@example.com to have WIDA District Learning Coordinator permissions. Most DACs have experience assigning staff WIDA usernames and passwords for testing purposes, so they will be a helpful resource in this process. Keep in mind that creation of the new accounts cannot be finalized by WIDA until after August 15, though it may go more quickly for districts that begin this process early.
Staff that already have a WIDA username and password will need expanded access to the eLearning Center. The DAC or the DLC will need to add this permission for existing users (or can include existing users in a mass file upload, described in option 1 below).
Two Ways to Provide Staff Permission to Use WIDA’s eLearning Center
1. The DAC or DLC can provide a file to WIDA client services with the e-mail addresses of the district or charter school staff who will need access.
2. The DAC or DLC may decide not to send a file to WIDA or may need to add new staff after the list has been submitted. Your DLC should contact firstname.lastname@example.org to request district learning coordinator permission. That will allow the DLC to use their WIDA account to manage user permissions (very similar to the process DACs have used to set permissions for ACCESS test administrators). They will be able to select “eLearning” as a WIDA user permission option for district staff. DLCs should remind users getting this account that they will get an e-mail from WIDA and will have to enter data to get access. If a user already has a WIDA account, the email will look different and will explain that they will have expanded access and they need to login to update the account. Once districts have provided staff expanded WIDA permissions to access the eLearning content, they should use the following WIDA URLs: https://www.wida.us or https://wida.wisc.edu (after August 15).
