WIDA Screener
There are three approved English Language Proficiency (ELP) screeners in Minnesota: (1) the WIDA Screener, (2) the Kindergarten W-APT and (3) the Kindergarten MODEL. The WIDA Screener includes a free online option and a paper option. Some of the online resources for the paper screener are free, while other paper screener items (student booklets) are available for purchase from WIDA WCEPS at a nominal fee. Proficiency Criteria: WIDA Screener Grades 1-12: Online and Paper
Student is EL Eligible: The student is identified as an English Learner if either of the statements below are true:
  1. Overall composite is below 4.5.
  2. Any domain score is below 4.0.
Student is English Proficient: The score indicates that the student is NOT an English Learner if both criteria below are true:
  1. Overall composite score is 4.5 or higher.
  2. Each domain score is 4.0 or higher.
Proficiency Criteria: Kindergarten W-APT
Kindergarten 1st Semester
Student is EL Eligible: The student is identified as an English Learner if the statement below is true: 
  • The total score for the listening and speaking domains is 27 or lower.
Student is English Proficient: The score indicates that the student is NOT an English Learner if statement below is true:
  • The total score for the listening and speaking domains is 28 or higher.
Kindergarten 2nd Semester (January 1 or later)
Student is EL Eligible: The student is identified as an English Learner if any of the statements below are true:
  • The total score for the listening and speaking domains is below 28.
  • The reading score is 10 or lower.
  • The writing score is 11 or lower.
Student is English Proficient: The student is NOT an English Learner if all of the statements below are true:
  • The total score for the listening and speaking domains is 28 or higher.
  • The reading score is 11 or higher.
  • The writing score is 12 or higher.
Proficiency Criteria: Kindergarten MODELThe student is identified as an English Learner if either of the statements below are true:
  1. Overall composite score is below 5.0.
  2. Any domain score is below 4.0.
The score indicates that the student is NOT an English Learner if both criteria below are true:
  1. Overall composite score is a 5.0 or higher.
  2. Each domain score is at or above 4.0.

Device Toolkit Enhancement
In late August 2017, Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) enhanced the Device Toolkit, which is the interface used to manage and configure testing devices for WIDA Screener Online and ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 assessments. The Device Toolkit Enhancements document provides an overview of the changes and steps for using the new interface to configure your testing environment. In addition, WIDA and DRC have developed a tutorial and quick demo to support users.
