The Minnesota Scholars of Distinction Award Program recognizes distinguished achievement by highly motivated, self-directed students in:
- Social Studies
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
- Theater Arts
To earn this recognition, students must complete required work in the Minnesota Academic Standards, demonstrate mastery of complex subject matter, and apply their knowledge to challenging projects. Students eligible for award consideration in leadership, mathematics, science, social studies, or STEM may be enrolled in grades 9-12 at a public or private school; homeschooled in grades 9-12, or enrolled in a Postsecondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program. Theater arts awards are limited to grades 11-12.
The Minnesota Scholars of Distinction Award Program has nurtured and recognized distinguished achievement by highly motivated, self-directed students since 2005. During the 2020-21 school year, the program will pause for a review of the leadership; mathematics; science; social studies; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); and theater arts awards. During this time, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and Perpich Center for Arts Education will examine criteria, access and opportunity for each category. Additional awards will also be considered for program expansion. Students with an interest in the award are encouraged to visit this page in June 2021 to review updated information.
